Today I was at my Citroen garage to have a malfunctioning driver’s side door handle replaced. I had problems getting in and out of the car. The problematic door handle should have been replaced 2 weeks ago when I and the car were present at the garage for other repairs. But on that occasion, I was told that the chap who did the painting had not done it as he was supposed to, had arrived at the premises, and would not be able to complete it.Yesterday I phoned in to ensure that the handle was painted and ready. So today I gave them the car and waited 2.5 hours for them to fit the handle. Then comes the bad news from the manager: the handle was replaced but with the wrong colour. It should have been black, but it was painted white. Obviously, the painter chap did not look at the car 2 weeks ago when he was present, and the car was there for him to see. But it seemed to me that other workers who had worked on the car did not tell him the colour. He must have heard ‘White car’ and decided to paint it white, without stepping outside to see my car. So, the manager was apologetic and said that they will replace it in 2 weeks with the correct colour, at their cost.

But the issue is that I took a day off work to be at that garage and I lost earnings. I am working 100 miles away from home, so it was not a matter of dropping off the car on a morning and returning for it in the afternoon. Further I do a community job that requires me to travel. Garages only rarely provided loan cars. Renting a car for a few hours was not feasible option. The scenario above was a waste of my time and certainly very disappointing. On my return journey home, in the car, I thought about how car repairs compare with medical practice – which broadly speaking is ‘human repairs’.
